The reason for this was that many fishers fishing with pinger expectations, didn’t have any idea how to use them. Sales dropped precipitously, from over 300,000 nautical miles (about 585,400 km) published to just under 200,000 (about 426,000 km).
The company decided to discontinue the service after selling 13,336 fishing hours. Fishtek Marine were selling 1.8kg (4 lb 10oz) octopus bait pouches. It’s clear that the tags themselves are now good enough to meet the needs of fishery scientists. We’re all in this together, so please, don’t just assume that the only reason that people are fishing with pinger is that they should be. The divers who gleaned an economic advantage could just as easily use a diver torch giving them superior night vision, or a HIPI belt high visibility vest.
If pongs can be expected to be unreliable, the pinger is not the right tool to use. When fishing with a pinger on, you should keep your last pass about a body length from the surface, pulse enough to suppress breaking fish (rabbit-whistling), and then pulse enough so the fish doesn’t get picked up on the later passes. You can also cancel pingers, but since these are currently very difficult to do, it’s best to avoid them.
